Chia Seeds: More Than Just for Chia Pets

When you think of “chia”, you might automatically think of those popular terracotta planters better known as Chia Pets. Here’s a fun fact: did you know that those seeds are also edible? Not only are they edible, they’re also quite healthy.

The origins of chia seeds go all the way back to the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations when they were used as a source to provide strength and endurance during a long distance run or when it was time for battle. That alone should give you an idea of how powerful these tiny things are.

Despite their minuscule size, chia seeds boast nutrients such as B vitamins, phosphorus, omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium, calcium, and much more. As opposed to flaxseed, chia seeds have a greater number of omega 3s, phosphorus, calcium, and fiber. A single tablespoon of chia seeds packs about seventy calories, two grams of protein, and just over four grams of fiber.

Just like if you were to apply them to a chia pet, placing chia seeds in water will create a gel. You may not know it, but this gel is more than just a step in growing a chia pet. The gel is comprised of what’s called soluble fiber which can help your digestive tract, help you to feel full for a longer period of time, and lower your blood cholesterol levels. All of these are great benefits if you’re attempting to lose weight.

The Plight of the Honeybee

The future of bees has remained an important issue among scientists and beekeepers as bee colonies face an uphill battle against major losses. During the fall of 2006, beekeepers across the United States reported huge, unprecedented losses. Mysteriously, bees were leaving their hives and not returning, leaving behind the queen.

This strange condition has since received a name: colony collapse disorder. Several years after these losses, bee colonies remain weak, and it’s a huge concern. Bees, after all, not only pollinate, they are critical in ensuring that commercial agriculture remains productive. More than a third of the food we consume relies on bees, including nuts, fruits, vegetables, and more. In fact, bees contribute over $10 billion to crop production in the United States. While bees won’t be disappearing entirely, the production of honey and crop pollination has become more expensive.

One major issue contributing to dwindling bee colonies is pesticides. Neonicotinoids, or simply “neonics” are used by farmers to ensure that their newly planted seeds are protected, but they’re also lethal towards bees, just a tiny amount of it can kill a honeybee.

At Hop Step Jump, we strongly support efforts to protect the honeybee population, which is why contribute a portion of our proceeds to the University of Florida Honey Bee Research & Extension Lab.

Lose Weight with Chia Seeds

chiaSeeds
Assuming you’ve read our previous blog about chia seeds, you may be aware that these tiny seeds pack a number of health benefits. They’re also incredibly effective when it comes to losing weight, something we’ll focus on a little more today.

Per the American Nutrition Association, about 28 grams of chia seeds come packed with just over 130 calories. These seeds have a mere nine grams of fat or roughly thirteen percent. With their low cholesterol, dietary fiber, and manganese, chia seeds are small but pack a huge punch.

Consuming chia seeds as a means of losing weight does have its pros. Its soluble fiber content will help to control your hunger by filling you up, helping with making sure that you don’t eat too much and they are also high in protein. They assist with lowering cholesterol and they can lower your fat absorption considerably. Should you wish to boost your weight loss efforts, increasing protein intake while cutting down on carbs and calories can potentially help.

There are different ways to consume chia seeds, or you can always munch on our Hop Step Jump Energy Bars that already have them as one of five healthy superfoods. These superfoods also include beet powder, cardamom, maca power, and bee pollen.

Almonds and Calories

almonds
Every year brings an opportunity for a new beginning, and adopting healthier eating habits is certainly a great way to start. Instead of eating that candy bar, a light snack like almonds will help you feel full and it’s packed with a low amount of calories.

Almonds sometimes get a bad rep for supposedly being too high in fat, which is why it’s important to understand serving sizes and an almond’s calorie component. A single almond has about seven calories and five of those are considered monounsatured fat (the healthy type of fat). You may have been told to consume almonds as part of your diet, and even if you feel unfulfilled, there is no no need to worry. A single ounce of almonds has a mere 164 calories, and only 129 calories of fat content. Best of all, only 1.1 grams are comprised of saturated fat.

Copper, manganese, vitamin E, phosphorus, all of these and more are found in almonds, as well as 3.5 grams of fiber, which is 13% of the recommended daily intake in an ounce of nuts.

Enjoying almonds as a snack comes with a number of health benefits as well. They promote heart health by reducing the risk of heart disease, blood pressure regulation, they’re a great source of energy, they stabilize cholesterol, boost the immune system, weight management, and more.

As with any food, it’s possible to overdo it. Stick to an ounce (about 23 almonds) per day. Alternatively, you can always get a healthy dose of almonds with one of our Hop Step Jump Energy Bars.

The Year of Healthy Superfoods

macaPowder
Is 2017 the year you plan on taking a closer look at your diet and becoming more health conscious? If so, you know one of the best ways to start becoming healthier is to incorporate superfoods into your diet. A recent article called “The biggest superfoods of 2017 you’ll want to add to your shopping list” mentions some of these superfoods, some of which may sound familiar if you’ve been following our blog posts or happened to take a closer look at some of the ingredients in our Hop Step Jump Energy Bars.

The first of these is coconut sugar, a significantly healthier alternative to white sugar that offers a greater number of vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants for the body, plus iron and zinc. It’s also a fantastic way to improve your mood.

All signs seem to point to pea protein becoming an alternative to whey protein. Not only is it gluten-free and vegan friendly, it can assist with weight loss, building muscle and it packs a huge protein punch equivalent to consuming soy and eggs.

Looking for a healthy dose of vitamins C, B, and E? Maca powder has all of these vitamins plus iron, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and more. Maca powder is a superb energy booster and can help greatly when you need that extra bit of stamina.

These three foods plus plenty more can all be found in our Hop Step Jump Energy Bars!

The FDA Releases Nutrition Facts Guidance Documents

nutrition
Earlier this month, the FDA issued a pair of draft guidance documents focused on finalizing the Nutrition Facts serving sizes and labeling in an effort to assist the industry with complying with the new rules. This new label for packaged foods was released in May of last year, representing its first major change in two decades.

The first draft guidance focuses on compliance, added sugar labeling, and some of the more cosmetic label changes. This added sugar label will appear under “Total Sugars”, assisting customers with understanding the amount of sugar that’s been added to the product. This decision to include added sugars comes from expert recommendations that suggest Americans should reduce their caloric intake from such foods.

The majority of food manufacturers will need to switch over to the new label by the end of July 2018. However, the FDA has made some tweaks for manufacturers that may not have as much income in annual food sales to comply with the changed rules. These requirements will also extend to any foods imported into the country.
